BACKGROUND: Plasmapheresis is widely used for severe hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP) to remove excessive triglycerides from plasma. This study aimed to evaluate whether plasmapheresis could improve the duration of organ failure in HTG-AP patients. METHODS: We analyzed a cohort of patients from a multicenter, prospective, long-running registry (the PERFORM) collecting HTG-AP patients admitted to the study sites within 72 h from the onset of symptoms. This study was based on data collected from November 2020 to March 2023. Patients who had organ failure at enrollment were involved in the analyses. The primary outcome was time to organ failure resolution within 14 days. Multivariable Cox regression model was used to evaluate the association between plasmapheresis and time to organ failure resolution. Directed acyclic graph (DAG) was used to identify potential confounders. RESULTS: A total of 122 HTG-AP patients were included (median [IQR] sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score at enrollment, 3.00 [2.00-4.00]). Among the study patients, 46 underwent plasmapheresis, and 76 received medical treatment. The DAG revealed that baseline serum triglyceride, APACHE II score, respiratory failure, cardiovascular failure, and renal failure were potential confounders. After adjusting for the selected confounders, there was no significant difference in time to organ failure resolution between patients undergoing plasmapheresis and those receiving exclusive medical treatment (HR = 1.07; 95%CI 0.68-1.68; P = 0.777). Moreover, the use of plasmapheresis was associated with higher ICU requirements (97.8% [45/46] vs. 65.8% [50/76]; OR, 19.33; 95%CI 2.20 to 169.81; P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: In HTG-AP patients with early organ failure, plasmapheresis was not associated with accelerated organ failure resolution compared to medical treatment but may be associated with more ICU admissions. Flatbands play an important role in correlated quantum matter and have promising applications in photonic lattices. Synthetic magnetic fields and destructive interference in lattices are traditionally used to obtain flatbands. However, such methods can only obtain a few flatbands with most bands remaining dispersive. Here we realize all-band-flat photonic lattices of an arbitrary size by precisely controlling the coupling strengths between lattice sites to mimic those in Fock-state lattices. This allows us to go beyond the perturbative regime of strain engineering and group all eigenmodes in flatbands, which simultaneously achieves high band flatness and large usable bandwidth. We map out the distribution of each flatband in the lattices and selectively excite the eigenmodes with different chiralities. Our method paves a way in controlling band structure and topology of photonic lattices.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the mediating role of self-esteem in social anxiety and QoL during the COVID-19 local epidemic in China. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. METHODS: This study conveniently selected 344 hypertensive patients from a Grade-A tertiary hospital in Wuhu, Anhui Province, as the study population. Participants completed the demographic questionnaire, the social phobia inventory, the self-esteem scale and the 36-item short-form health survey. RESULTS: Social anxiety, self-esteem and QoL were significantly correlated with each other. Social anxiety showed no direct effect on QoL (ß = 0.011, p > 0.05). Social anxiety showed an indirect effect on QoL (ß = -0.248, p < 0.001). Self-esteem fully mediated the association between social anxiety and QoL in hypertensive patients. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Hypertensive patients in this study were participants during the data collection process. Nursing staff from the cardiology department at the hospital of a hospital in Wuhu City, Anhui Province assisted in the recruitment phase of the data collection process.

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar degenerative disease (LDD) is one of the most common reasons for patients to present with low back pain. Proper evaluation and treatment of patients with LDD are important, which clinicians perform using a variety of predictors for guidance in choosing the most appropriate treatment. Because evidence on which treatment is best for LDD is limited, the purpose of this study is to establish a clinical prediction model based on machine learning (ML) to accurately predict outcomes of patients with LDDs in the early stages by their clinical characteristics and imaging changes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this study, we develop and validate a clinical prognostic model to determine whether patients will experience complications within 6 months after percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). Baseline data will be collected from patients' electronic medical records. As of now, we have recruited a total of 580 participants (n=400 for development, n=180 for validation). The study's primary outcome will be the incidence of complications within 6 months after PELD. We will use an ML algorithm and a multiple logistic regression analysis model to screen factors affecting surgical efficacy. We will evaluate the calibration and differentiation performance of the model by the area under the curve. Sensitivity (Sen), specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value will be reported in the validation data set, with a target of 80% Sen. The results of this study could better illustrate the performance of the clinical prediction model, ultimately helping both clinicians and patients. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was obtained from the medical ethics committee of the Affiliated Hospital of Gansu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Lanzhou, China; No. 2022-57). Findings and related data will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, at conferences, and through open scientific frameworks. Secoisolariciresinol (SECO) is one of the major lignans occurring in various grains, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. The gut microbiota plays an important role in the biotransformation of dietary lignans into enterolignans, which might exhibit more potent bioactivities than the precursor lignans. This study aimed to identify, synthesize, and evaluate the microbial metabolites of SECO and to develop efficient lead compounds from the metabolites for the treatment of osteoporosis. SECO was fermented with human gut microbiota in anaerobic or micro-aerobic environments at different time points. Samples derived from microbial transformation were analyzed using an untargeted metabolomics approach for metabolite identification. Nine metabolites were identified and synthesized. Their effects on cell viability, osteoblastic differentiation, and gene expression were examined. The results showed that five of the microbial metabolites exerted potential osteogenic effects similar to those of SECO or better. The results suggested that the enterolignans might account for the osteoporotic effects of SECO in vivo. Thus, the presence of the gut microbiota could offer a good way to form diverse enterolignans with bone-protective effects. The current study improves our understanding of the microbial transformation products of SECO and provides new approaches for new candidate identification in the treatment of osteoporosis.

AIMS: To investigate loneliness, depression and sleep quality in patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) and to examine the mediating role of depression between loneliness and sleep quality among this group of patients with T2DM. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A group of T2DM patients was recruited from a tertiary hospital affiliated with a university in Wuhu City, Anhui Province from May to October 2021 by convenient sampling. Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modelling were used for data analysis in this study. RESULTS: The direct effect of loneliness on sleep quality was not statistically significant, but the indirect effect of depression on sleep quality was statistically significant. Depression mediated the relationship between loneliness and sleep quality. Depression can affect emotional health and reduce sleep quality. We should reduce the loneliness of patients, prevent the occurrence of depression and improve the quality of sleep.

Photonic topological states, providing light-manipulation approaches in robust manners, have attracted intense attention. Connecting photonic topological states with far-field degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) has given rise to fruitful phenomena. Recently emerged higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), hosting boundary states two or more dimensions lower than those of bulk, offer new paradigms to localize or transport light topologically in extended dimensionalities. However, photonic HOTIs have not been related to d.o.f. of radiation fields yet. Here, we report the observation of polarization-orthogonal second-order topological corner states at different frequencies on a designer-plasmonic kagome metasurface in the far field. Such phenomenon stands on two mechanisms, i.e., projecting the far-field polarizations to the intrinsic parity d.o.f. of lattice modes and the parity splitting of the plasmonic corner states in spectra. We theoretically and numerically show that the parity splitting originates from the underlying interorbital coupling. Both near-field and far-field experiments verify the polarization-orthogonal nondegenerate second-order topological corner states. These results promise applications in robust optical single photon emitters and multiplexed photonic devices.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is an incurable complication occurring after breast cancer treatment. The influence of obesity/overweight on the development of BCRL at different points after surgery was seldom verified. We aimed to determine the cut-off BMI/weight value associated with an increased risk of BCRL at different postoperative time in Chinese breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Patients who underwent breast surgery plus axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) were retrospectively evaluated. Disease and treatment characteristics of participants were collected. BCRL was diagnosed by circumference measurements. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship of lymphedema risk with BMI/weight and other disease- and treatment-related factors. RESULTS: 518 patients were included. Lymphedema occurred more frequently among breast cancer patients with preoperative BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (37.88%) than among those with preoperative BMI < 25 kg/m2(23.32%), with significant differences at 6-12 and 12-18 months after surgery (χ2 = 23.183, P = 0.000; χ2 = 5.279, P = 0.022). By multivariable logistics analysis, preoperative BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 presented a significantly greater risk of lymphedema than a preoperative BMI < 25 kg/m2 (OR [95% CI] = 2.928 [1.565, 5.480]). Other factors, including radiation (breast/chest wall + axilla vs. none: OR [95% CI] = 3.723[2.271-6.104]), was an independent risk factor for lymphedema. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative obesity was an independent risk factor for BCRL in Chinese breast cancer survivors, and a preoperative BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 indicated greater likelihood of lymphedema development within 6-18 months postoperatively.

Space and guided electromagnetic waves, as widely known, are two crucial cornerstones in extensive wireless and integrated applications respectively. To harness the two cornerstones, radiative and integrated devices are usually developed in parallel based on the same physical principles. An emerging mechanism, i.e., anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry originated from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics, has led to fruitful phenomena in harnessing guided waves. However, it is still absent in harnessing space waves. Here, we propose a radiative plasmonic APT design to harness space waves, and experimentally demonstrate it with subwavelength designer-plasmonic structures. We observe two exotic phenomena unrealized previously. Rotating polarizations of incident space waves, we realize polarization-controlled APT phase transition. Tuning incidence angles, we observe multi-stage APT phase transition in higher-order APT systems, constructed by using the scalability of leaky-wave couplings. Our scheme shows promise in demonstrating novel APT physics, and constructing APT-symmetry-empowered radiative devices.

Background Developing deep learning models for radiology requires large data sets and substantial computational resources. Data set size limitations can be further exacerbated by distribution shifts, such as rapid changes in patient populations and standard of care during the COVID-19 pandemic. A common partial mitigation is transfer learning by pretraining a "generic network" on a large nonmedical data set and then fine-tuning on a task-specific radiology data set. Purpose To reduce data set size requirements for chest radiography deep learning models by using an advanced machine learning approach (supervised contrastive [SupCon] learning) to generate chest radiography networks. Materials and Methods SupCon helped generate chest radiography networks from 821 544 chest radiographs from India and the United States. The chest radiography networks were used as a starting point for further machine learning model development for 10 prediction tasks (eg, airspace opacity, fracture, tuberculosis, and COVID-19 outcomes) by using five data sets comprising 684 955 chest radiographs from India, the United States, and China. Three model development setups were tested (linear classifier, nonlinear classifier, and fine-tuning the full network) with different data set sizes from eight to 85. Results Across a majority of tasks, compared with transfer learning from a nonmedical data set, SupCon reduced label requirements up to 688-fold and improved the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) at matching data set sizes. At the extreme low-data regimen, training small nonlinear models by using only 45 chest radiographs yielded an AUC of 0.95 (noninferior to radiologist performance) in classifying microbiology-confirmed tuberculosis in external validation. At a more moderate data regimen, training small nonlinear models by using only 528 chest radiographs yielded an AUC of 0.75 in predicting severe COVID-19 outcomes. Conclusion Supervised contrastive learning enabled performance comparable to state-of-the-art deep learning models in multiple clinical tasks by using as few as 45 images and is a promising method for predictive modeling with use of small data sets and for predicting outcomes in shifting patient populations. © RSNA, 2022 Online supplemental material is available for this article.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the moderation/mediation between the age of menarche and obesity parameters in predicting blood pressure (BP) in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. DESIGN: Our study is a population-based cross-sectional study. SETTING: Participants in this study came from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). PARTICIPANTS: The analytical sample included 4513 participants aged 45-96 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Data were selected from the CHARLS, a cross-sectional study. Between-group differences were evaluated using χ2, t-test and one-way analysis of variance. The trend of related variables by characteristics was also tested using contrast analysis, as appropriate. Then, correlations between characteristics, moderator, mediator, and independent and dependent variables were used by Spearman's correlation test and Pearson's correlation test. Finally, the mediation analysis was performed by model 4 in PROCESS V3.3 macro for SSPSS, and moderation analysis was used by model 1 for assessment. All covariates were adjusted in the moderation or mediation models. RESULTS: In the correlation analysis, body mass index (BMI) and waist circle (WC) level were positively correlated with both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in women (BMI and DBP: r=0.221, p<0.001; WC and DBP: r=0.183, p<0.001; BMI and SBP: r=0.129, p<0.001; WC and SBP: r=0.177, p<0.001). Age of menarche was negatively correlated with DBP (r=-0.060, p<0.001). However, the age of menarche was not significantly correlated with SBP (r=-0.014, p=0.335). In the moderator analysis, after controlling for the potential confounders, the interaction term of obesity parameters×age of menarche was not significant for predicting either DBP (BMI: B=0.0260, SE=0.0229, p=0.2556, 95% CI -0.0189 to 0.071; WC: B=0.0099, SE=0.0074, p=0.1833, 95% CI -0.0047 to 0.0244) or SBP (BMI: B=0.0091, SE=0.0504, p=0.8561, 95% CI -0.0897 to 0.108; WC: B=-0.0032, SE=0.0159, p=0.8427, 95% CI -0.0343 to 0.028). All correlations were significant correlation between age of menarche, obesity parameters and BP except the path of the menarche age→SBP (with the addition of the BMI indicator: ß=-0.0004, B=-0.0046, p=0.9797, 95% CI -0.3619 to 0.3526; with the addition of the WC indicator: ß=0.0004, B=0.0044, p=0.9804, 95% CI -0.3439 to 0.3526) in crude model. In general, after controlling for potential confounders, BMI (DBP: ß=-0.0471, B= -0.2682, p=0.0021, 95% CI -0.4388 to -0.0976; SBP: ß=-0.0515, B=-0.6314, p<0.001, 95% CI -0.9889 to -0.2739) and WC (DBP: ß=-0.0474, B= -0.2689, p<0.001, 95% CI -0.4395 to -0.0984; SBP: ß=-0.0524, B=-0.6320, p<0.001, 95% CI -0.9832 to -0.2807) partly mediated the relationship between age of menarche and BP. CONCLUSIONS: The interaction term of obesity parameters×age of menarche was not significant for predicting either DBP or SBP in women. Moreover, obesity parameters partly mediated the relationship between the age of menarche and BP.

OBJECTIVE: (1) To evaluate the diagnostic performance of radiomics in differentiating high-grade glioma from brain metastasis and how to improve the model. (2) To assess the methodological quality of radiomics studies and explore ways of embracing the clinical application of radiomics. METHODS: Studies using radiomics to differentiate high-grade glioma from brain metastasis published by 26 July 2021 were systematically reviewed. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the Radiomics Quality Score (RQS) system and Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool, respectively. Pooled sensitivity and specificity of the radiomics model were also calculated. RESULTS: Seventeen studies combining 1,717 patients were included in the systematic review, of which 10 studies without data leakage suspicion were employed for the quantitative statistical analysis. The average RQS was 5.13 (14.25% of total), with substantial or almost perfect inter-rater agreements. The inclusion of clinical features in the radiomics model was only reported in one study, as was the case for publicly available algorithm code. The pooled sensitivity and specificity were 84% (95% CI, 80-88%) and 84% (95% CI, 81-87%), respectively. The performances of feature extraction from the volume of interest (VOI) or (semi) automatic segmentation in the radiomics models were superior to those of protocols employing region of interest (ROI) or manual segmentation. CONCLUSION: Radiomics can accurately differentiate high-grade glioma from brain metastasis. The adoption of standardized workflow to avoid potential data leakage as well as the integration of clinical features and radiomics are advised to consider in future studies. KEY POINTS: • The pooled sensitivity and specificity of radiomics for differentiating high-grade gliomas from brain metastasis were 84% and 84%, respectively. • Avoiding potential data leakage by adopting an intensive and standardized workflow is essential to improve the quality and generalizability of the radiomics model. • The application of radiomics in combination with clinical features in differentiating high-grade gliomas from brain metastasis needs further validation.

Objective: Prefrailty and frailty are two common conditions among older individuals. Recent studies have reported the association between frailty and depressive symptoms, but whether those conditions could predict depressive symptoms is still inconsistent in a few longitudinal studies. In our study, we aimed to estimate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between frailty and incident depressive symptoms in a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Method: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which included 17,284 adults aged ≥ 45 years. Participants were followed every two years using a face-to-face, computer-aided personal interview (CAPI) and structured questionnaire. We excluded participants with no follow-up data. The numbers of individuals who completed the baseline surveys were 2,579 and follow-up surveys were 839 for the short-term (2 years from 2011 to 2013) and 788 for the long-term (4 years from 2011 to 2015). In addition, Frailty was measured by the Fried criteria and depressive symptoms were estimated by the Chinese version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). Logistic regression was used to analyze the odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the cross-sectional associations of frailty and its components with depressive symptoms in the participants at baseline. Cox proportional hazards analysis was conducted using the hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the prospective associations of baseline frailty and pre-frailty and its component in the participants without depressive symptoms at baseline. Results: At baseline, 57.93% of participants had depressive symptoms and 55.84% had pre-frail and 11.63% had frailty. In the cross-sectional analysis, both pre-frailty (OR = 5.293, 95%CI 4.363-6.422) and frailty (OR = 16.025, 95%CI 10.948-23.457) were associated with depressive symptoms. In the longitudinal analysis, frailty [HR = 1.395 (0.966-2.013)] and pre-frailty [HR = 2.458 (0.933, 6.479)] were not significantly associated with incident depressive symptoms in a full-adjusted model among participants free of baseline depressive symptoms during the short-term. However, frailty [HR = 1.397 (1.017, 1.920)] and pre-frailty [HR = 2.992 (1.210, 7.397)] were significantly associated with incident depressive symptoms during the short term. In the components of frailty, slowness [HR = 1.597 (1.078, 2.366)] was associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms onset during the short-term. Weakness [HR = 2.08 (1.055, 4.104)] and exhaustion [HR = 1.928 (1.297, 2.867)] were associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms onset during the short-term. Conclusion: Among the middle-aged and older adults, frailty, pre-frailty did not predict depressive symptoms during 2 years of follow-up, when accounting for the potential confounders, slowness considered alone predicted depressive symptoms. Additionally, frailty, pre-frailty predicted depressive symptoms during 4 years of follow-up, when accounting for the potential confounders, weakness and exhaustion considered alone predicted depressive symptoms.

The recently discovered non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) manifests the breakdown of current classification of topological phases in energy-nonconservative systems, and necessitates the introduction of non-Hermitian band topology. So far, all NHSE observations are based on one type of non-Hermitian band topology, in which the complex energy spectrum winds along a closed loop. As recently characterized along a synthetic dimension on a photonic platform, non-Hermitian band topology can exhibit almost arbitrary windings in momentum space, but their actual phenomena in real physical systems remain unclear. Here, we report the experimental realization of NHSE in a one-dimensional (1D) non-reciprocal acoustic crystal. With direct acoustic measurement, we demonstrate that a twisted winding, whose topology consists of two oppositely oriented loops in contact rather than a single loop, will dramatically change the NHSE, following previous predictions of unique features such as the bipolar localization and the Bloch point for a Bloch-wave-like extended state. This work reveals previously unnoticed features of NHSE, and provides the observation of physical phenomena originating from complex non-Hermitian winding topology.

OBJECTIVES: Undernutrition early in life may increase the incidence of adverse effects on adult health. The relations between undernutrition and obesity parameters (body mass index (BMI) and WC (waist circle)) and hypertension were often contradictory. Our study is aimed at identifying the combined effects of famine exposure and obesity parameters on hypertension in middle-aged and older Chinese. DESIGN: A population-based cross-sectional study. Setting. Data were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study Wave2011 (CHARLS Wave2011). Participants. The sample included 12945 individuals aged 45 to 96. Main Outcome Measurements. The study analyzed data from 12945 middle-aged and older Chinese selected from CHARLS Wave2011. Differences between baseline characteristics and famine exposure/BMI levels/WC levels were evaluated using the t-, Chi-square- (χ 2-), and F-test. Then, the difference in the prevalence of hypertension between baseline characteristics was estimated by the t- and χ 2-test. Finally, multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to explore the associations of famine exposure and obesity parameters with odds of prevalence of hypertension. RESULTS: Among the 12945 participants, 1548 (11.96%) participants had been exposed to the Chinese famine during the fetal group, whereas 5101 (39.41%) participants and 4362 (33.70%) participants had been exposed to the famine during childhood and adolescence/adult group, respectively. Regarding the participants with BMI levels, 3746 (28.94%) were overweight, and 1465 (11.32%) were obese, whereas 5345 (41.29%) of the participants with WC levels were obese, respectively. Furthermore, 1920 (31.17%) had hypertension in males and 2233 (32.91%) in females. In multivariable-adjusted models, famine exposure and obesity parameters were related with prevalence of hypertension independently in total populations ((1) model threec, famine exposure with prevalence of hypertension: the fatal-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR1.27; 95% CI 1.08, 1.49); childhood-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR1.64; 95% CI 1.44, 1.87); the adolescence/adult-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR3.06; 95% CI 2.68, 3.50); P for trend < 0.001; (2) model threee, famine exposure with prevalence of hypertension: the fatal-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR1.25; 95% CI 1.06, 1.47); childhood-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR1.52; 95% CI 1.34, 1.73); the adolescence/adult-exposed vs. no-exposed group (OR2.66; 95% CI 2.33, 3.03); P for trend < 0.001; (3) model threeg, BMI levels with prevalence of hypertension: overweight vs. normal (OR1.75; 95% CI 1.60, 1.91); obesity vs. normal (OR2.79; 95% CI 2.48, 3.15); P for trend < 0.001; (4) WC levels with prevalence of hypertension: overweight vs. normal (OR1.42; 95% CI 1.36, 1.48)). When stratified by sex, results in both males and females were mostly similar to those in the total population. In general, interaction analysis in the multivariable-adjusted model, compared with the combination of normal BMI/WC levels and no-exposed famine group, all groups trended towards higher odds of prevalence of hypertension (the greatest increase in odds, adolescence/adult-exposed group with obesity in BMI levels: (OR8.13; 95% CI 6.18, 10.71); adolescence/adult-exposed group with obesity in WC levels: (OR6.36; 95% CI 5.22, 7.75); P for interaction < 0.001). When stratified by sex, the results in both males and females were also similar to those in the total population. CONCLUSION: Our data support a strongly positive combined effect of famine exposure and obesity parameters on hypertension in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in early life may affect health in later life. The associations between malnutrition and serum uric acid (SUA) and hypertension were inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate the individual and combined association between famine exposure and serum uric acid and hypertension in middle-aged and older Chinese. METHODS: Data were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave2011. The analytic sample included 9368 individuals aged 45 to 90. Differences between baseline characteristics and famine exposure/SUA level were evaluated using the Chi-square test, t-test, and F-test. Then, the differences in the prevalence of hypertension between characteristic groups was also estimated by the Chi-square and t-test. Finally, multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models examined association of famine exposure and serum uric acid with odds of prevalence of hypertension. RESULTS: A total of 9368 individuals were enrolled in the study, 4366 (46.61%) and 5002 (53.39%) were male and female, respectively. Among males, 459 (10.51%) had been exposed to the Chinese famine during the fetal stage, whereas 1760 (40.31%) and 1645 (37.68%) had been exposed to the famine during childhood and adolescence/adult stage, respectively. Among females, 635 (12.69%) had been exposed to the Chinese famine during the fetal stage, whereas 1988 (39.74%) and 1569 (31.37%) had been exposed to the famine during childhood and adolescence/adult stage, respectively. Regarding the participants with SUA level measurements, 290 (6.64%) reported having Hyperuricemia (HUA) in males and 234 (4.68%) in the females. Furthermore, 1357 (31.08%) reported having hypertension in male and 1619 (32.37%) in the female. In multivariable-adjusted model, famine exposure and serum uric acid were associated with prevalence of hypertension independently in total populations [(1) Model fourd, fatal exposed group vs non-exposed group: 1.25 (95% CI 1.03, 1.52); childhood-exposed group vs non-exposed group:1.60 (95% CI 1.37, 1.87); adolescence/adult exposed group vs non-exposed group: 2.87 (95% CI 2.44, 3.37), P for trend < 0.001; (2) Model four e, high vs normal:1.73 (95% CI 1.44, 2.08)]. When stratified by sex, the results in both males and females were similar to those in the total population. In general, interaction analysis in the multivariable-adjusted model, compared with the combination of normal SUA level and no-exposed famine stage, all groups trended towards higher odds of prevalence of hypertension [the greatest increase in odds, adolescence/adult exposed stage and high SUA level in total participants: OR4.34; 95%CI 3.24, 5.81; P for interaction < 0.001]. When stratified by sex, the results in both males and females were also similar to those in the total population. CONCLUSION: Our data support a strongly positive individual and combined association of famine exposure and serum uric acid with hypertension in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation is one promising technology for seawater desalination and sewage purification because it offers a feasible and sustainable strategy to relieve global water scarcity. Herein, a novel hybrid film composed of recycled carbon soot and poly(vinyl alcohol) is developed by a very simple, green, and highly scalable "salt-assisted" assembling method. The hybrid film possesses characteristics with a porous structure, superhydrophilicity, ∼100% light absorption, and low thermal conductivity, which can effectively convert light into heat under solar illumination. Consequently, the hybrid film can achieve a photothermal conversion efficiency of 91.5% under a stimulated solar irradiation of 1 kW m-2. Furthermore, the hybrid film can be applied for seawater desalination and dye wastewater purification. The findings of our work not only provide a new photothermal platform with high light-to-thermal conversion ability and good reusability but also open a new avenue for the applications of carbon soot-based hybrid films in solar-assisted water evaporation and sewage purification.

Using first-principles simulations, we surveyed the interactions between porous MoS2 monolayers in the 2H phase and 15 small molecules (H2, O2, H2O, H2S, CO, CO2, SO2, N2, NO, NO2, NH3, HF, HCl, CH4, and CH3OH). Four types of molecules including H2, O2, H2S, and NO2 directly dissociate and saturate the corners of the most common S-rimmed triangular pores, while other molecules only molecularly adsorb. The trisublayered structure of a MoS2 monolayer allows a new in-pore stable adsorption configuration in addition to the most studied above-pore adsorption configuration. Furthermore, the gas penetration pathways through the MoS2 membranes are no longer the conventional single-peak curve with one transition state like in the case of porous graphenes but are the "M"-shaped curve featuring two transition states connected by a stable in-pore adsorption state. The irreversible pore passivation via dissociative adsorption and reversible pore decoration by molecular adsorption will lead to very different separation performances of the MoS2 membranes, largely by changing the effective pore size. For example, the S-rimmed pores in the pore-3Mo2S membrane allow free pass of CH4 and CO2 molecules. If passivated by H atoms, the membrane can be used to separate gas mixtures like H2/CH4 and H2/CO2 with selectivities of 109:1 and 108:1, respectively. The permeance value of H2 is estimated to be about 0.15 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 at room temperature and 0.1 bar pressure drop across the membrane. In contrast, the medium strong adsorption of a SO2 molecule in the center of the pore will completely block the passage of CO2 and CH4, whose removal only needs heating. Our work reveals the complex behaviors of porous transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) toward guest molecules.

Solar steam generation by photothermal materials has recently emerged as a new and feasible approach to effectively harvest solar energy in a variety of applications. This work reports an efficient heat localization material based on the renewable cellulose acetate cigarette filters and a reduced graphene oxide coating (RGO-CF) as the light-to-heat conversion layer for solar steam generation. RGO-CF possessed an aligned structure with superhydrophilic nature, lower thermal conductivity (0.0733 Wm-1 K-1 ), and broad light adsorption (≈100 %). These characteristics enable rapid water transportation and excellent light-to-heat conversion by the resulting RGO-CF with an energy conversion efficiency of 94 % under stimulated solar illumination (1 kW m-2 ), which demonstrates that RGO-CF is a promising photothermal conversion material for solar steam generation. Such strategy for preparation of photothermal materials not only reduces the fabrication cost but also provides a fundamental guidance for the practical application of renewable polymer resources from used cigarette filters.
